Adult Summer Reading Club for Adults

June 21st - August 30th
Pick-up a reading log and receive a 'goodie' of appreciation. Adults may read or listen to a book, watch a DVD, or attend a summer program to be eligible to choose a pre-publication book and enter the drawing for final prizes.

   The Thorne Miniature Rooms
          Monday, July 14th at 7:00 pm
A hobby of collecting as a child inspired Narcissa Thorne to create European and American rooms in miniature. Find out how Mrs. Thorne turned a hobby into an educational tool for the public - spreading interest in interior design and creating much-loved slices of history to be enjoyed by all. Sally Kalmbach will highlight tales of the Thorne Rooms as she narrates a slide presentation.

 
     A Visit with Daniel Burnham
          Thursday, July 17th at 7:00 pm
In a living history presentation, actor R. J. Lindsey portrays Daniel Burnham as he narrates a slide show documenting Chicago's rise from the ashes of the 1871 Fire to the building of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition to the Chicago Plan of 1909, outlining development for the city. A selection of original 1893 World Fair souvenirs will be displayed.
 
   Greektown Chicago
          Thursday, July 24th at 7:00 pm
Alexa Ganakos, author of Greektown Chicago: Its Restaurants and Its People, will share the fascinating story of the Greeks in Chicago… from their earliest beginnings around the Hull House to their spread throughout Chicagoland.
 
   Forgotten Synagogues of Chicago
          Thursday, July 31st at 7:00 pm
As the author of Doors of Redemption and a Chicago building inspector, Robb Packer, presents an illustrated lecture of the history of Chicago synagogue architecture with stories going back over 100 years. See how these magnificent structures have evolved into churches, Asian temples, condos, community buildings, and even a mosque.

Spare time for reading this summer? Our afternoon book club continues throughout the summer. Please join us as we discuss books that are written by women, about women, and cover issues women face throughout their lives. The discussions will be facilitated by Carol Carter. The books are available each month for check-out, in print and in audio. Ask at the circulation desk!

Our evening book club meets every second Thursday of the month! Join us! We are open to everyone interested in reading and discussing a variety of books! The books are available each month for check-out in print and in audio at the circulation desk!
