The Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall – 20th Anniversary Lecture
Monday, March 22 at 7:00pm
Twenty years ago, the Berlin Wall fell and brought Germany together,
paving the way to unification. With the rise of the Berlin Wall on August
13, 1961, the course of Germany’s and especially of Berlin’s history took
a tragic turn. It took 28 years (November 9, 1989) to tear down the cruel
and insurmountable symbol of Germany’s division. Join German historian, Anette
Isaacs, M.A. for a lecture with a historical and political overview of this
painful period in Berlin’s history.
Pink Brain, Blue Brain
Tuesday, March 23 at 10:30am
Boys and girls are obviously different,
but few of their behavioral gaps are as 'hard-wired' as our current Mars-Venus
obsession asserts. Associate
Professor of Neuroscience at The Chicago Medical School of Rosalind
Franklin University and Lake Bluff resident, Dr. Lise Eliot, discusses the
roles of both nature and nurture in shaping boy-girl differences in behavior
and brain function, and suggest ways to help raise both genders with a fuller
deck of cognitive and emotional skills.
Alicia, My Story
(Adapted and performed by Betsey Means)
Monday, April 19 at 7:00pm
Betsey Means of WomenLore returns to our library to portray Alicia
Appleman-Jurman in a one-woman performance adapted directly from journals,
autobiographies, and personal writings. Alicia is the story of a young girl
who managed to survive in a hostile world. While fleeing the Nazis through
war-ravaged Poland, she began saving the lives of people she did not know.
Her family cruelly wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the
Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. This
is an uplifting story of true-life heroism. Audiences enjoy a complete theatrical
experience, authentically costumed and accurately evoking a bygone era.
