Highlights for April 2011
|
The Lake Bluff Public Library's renovation project
will begin on Monday, April 4th. This renovation has been
in the works for many years, and will make important improvements to
the library. Among the major new features will be new carpeting,
improved lighting, more space for seating and laptop computer use, a
better layout for materials, and more efficient staff workspace. The
project is expected to be completed by the end of June.
The library will be open during most of the project.
April 11-22 will be a bit noisy during the most intensive part of the
construction. Below are the key milestones for April:
- April
4: Move the Fiction shelves from along the
brick wall on the library's main floor
- April 11-22: Construct
a new entry along the wall in the shared corridor with the Vliet
Museum
- April 25: Move
the checkout desk, public computers, and staff work area into
temporary space downstairs
May
and June will see remodeling work at the checkout desk, staff area,
and computer lab, in addition to improvements on the second floor.
Check
here for photos
and additional renovation updates.

The Mystery of
Living: Agatha Christie
Tuesday, April 5
at 1:30pm
|
Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was a prolific English
"Queen of Crime" author of world renown. She created such
famous detectives as Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. In 1971,
Christie received England's highest honor, the Order of the British
Empire, Dame Commander. Betsey Means from WomanLore
returns to our library to portray Agatha Christie in a one-woman
performance adapted from journals and personal writings. Ms. Means
offers a complete theatrical experience, authentically costumed and
designed, accurately evoking the era being portrayed.

From Baghdad with
Love
(Nonfiction, 196 p., 2006)
Love and hope
often arrive in the strangest places and in the strangest ways.
During his tour of duty in Iraq, Lt. Colonel Jay Kopelman of the U.S.
Marines suffered the emotional ravages common for those involved in
the bloody battle for Fallujah. Breaking the strict military rules
forbidding pets, Kopelman and his comrades adopted an abandoned puppy
left behind after the battle in the dangerous red zone. The dog
(named Lava) befriended the marines and journalists, and was
eventually smuggled out of Iraq by the soldiers, with the help of NPR
reporters, ABC cameramen, Iraqi citizens, and the Iams Pet Food
Company. (Publisher's Description)

The Big Short
by
Michael Lewis
(Nonfiction,
461 p., 2010)
A brilliant
account--character-rich and darkly humorous--of how the U.S. economy
was driven over the cliff. Truth really is stranger than fiction. Who
better than the author of the signature bestseller Liar's Poker
to explain how the event we were told was impossible--the free fall
of the American economy--finally occurred; how the things that we
wanted, like ridiculously easy money and greatly expanded home
ownership, were vehicles for that crash; and how shareholder demand
for profit forced investment executives to eat the forbidden fruit of
toxic derivatives. Michael Lewis's
splendid cast of characters includes villains, a few heroes, and a
lot of people who look very, very foolish: high government officials,
including the watchdogs; heads of major investment banks (some
overlap here with previous category); perhaps even the face in your
mirror. He proves yet again that he is the finest and funniest
chronicler of our times. (Publisher's Description)

In the Time of the
Butterflies
by
Julia Alvarez
(Fiction,
325 p., 1994)
Julia Alvarez's
second novel is a powerful story of courage, innocence, and political
martyrdom in the Hispanic Caribbean. Based on actual events--the
death of three sisters on November 25, 1960--the novel immerses us in
an epoch in the life of the Dominican Republic. The
"Butterflies," as they were known, lived daringly and
dangerously under a regime that imprisoned, tortured, and killed with
impunity. "Brimming with warmth and vitality . . .
Mesmerizing."--Kirkus Reviews, starred; "Potent and
luminous."--Philadelphia Inquirer. An ALA Notable Book, a
Book-of-the-Month Club and Quality Paperback Book Selection.
