A Letter from Library Director Matt Womack
Changes Coming to ILL Services
|
|
The
budget crisis in Springfield is starting to impact public libraries
across the state. Funding for Interlibrary Loan service (ILL) comes
from the State Library, but the state has not provided much of the
funding that was expected this year.
ILL
is coordinated by 9 regional library systems that provide logistical,
communication, and professional services to libraries statewide. The
regional system that supports Lake Bluff is called North Suburban
Library System (NSLS), and it coordinates approximately 2.5 million
ILL transactions each year. Lake Bluff Public Library participates in
about 3,000 of those loans annually.
Due to a lack of funding, North Suburban Library System ceased its
operations at the end of May. In an emergency move, area libraries are
funding a continuation of ILL service through August. This transition
time will give us an opportunity to plan a long term solution.
Libraries certainly want to continue providing this valuable service,
but there may be changes to how it works. Without funding from the
State Library, we will have to examine the impact of adding this
expense to local budgets. Along with our neighboring libraries, we
will be looking at many different options this summer. When we
finalize the plan, we'll communicate any changes that may be
necessary to maintain ILL service.
If you feel strongly about retaining the existing level of ILL
service, please contact the state library or your elected
representatives.
