Renovation Update: Library Closed June 6-10

The renovation project is more than half-finished. We started in April and are on schedule to finish the project by the end of June. Thank you for patiently enduring the inconveniences we've imposed on you during the construction.

The next phase requires that we close the library for a week to lay the carpet on the ground and 2nd floors. We will be closed Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10. We reopen on Saturday, June 11

to kick off the Summer Reading Club for children and teens.

Once the carpet has been installed, we will need a couple of weeks to bring in new furniture and complete the finishing touches. We've scheduled an Open House on Saturday, July 30 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Take a look at our summer newsletter for more details about this special event.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

by Rebecca Skloot

(Nonfiction, 369 p., 2010)

Henrietta Lacks was a 31-year-old black mother of five in Baltimore when she died of cervical cancer in 1951. Without her knowledge, doctors treating her at Johns Hopkins took tissue samples from her cervix for research. They spawned the first viable, indeed miraculously productive, cell line-known as HeLa. These cells have aided in medical discoveries from the polio vaccine to AIDS treatments. What the author so poignantly portrays is the devastating impact Henrietta's death, and the eventual importance of her cells, had on her husband and children.
