History of the
Crusades: A Military Campaign
|
In hopes of restoring Christian control, Pope Urban II
launched the First Crusade from France in 1095. Four years later (and
against all odds) armies led by European Christians took the city of
Jerusalem from its Muslim rulers. The crusade movement had tremendous
impact on the history of the Mediterranean world, affecting relations
between Christians, Jews, and Muslims, the development of
international trade, the exploration of the world, and much more.
Thursday, October 6 at 7:00pm
Dr. Anna
Trumbore-Jones, an Associate Professor of History at Lake Forest
College, discusses the era leading up to the crusades and important
background information including penance, pilgrimage and the Peace of
God movement.
Thursday,
October 20 at 7:00pm
Dr. Jones returns
to explain the First Crusade (1095-1099 and the only successful
crusade) and the changes in the movement in subsequent centuries,
including the establishment of the crusader states, the resurgence of
Muslim power, and the inauguration of crusades against fellow
Christians.

How a Plain ol' House
Works
Thursday, October 27
at 7:00pm
|
Local architect David Wytmar
from Groundworks understands
the science of houses. Why are houses drafty; why are basements damp;
and why does frost form on some windows and not others? When builders
and home owners ignore this science, they must deal with the
consequences such as mold, rotting wood and "sick" houses. Mr. Wytmar's
program describes the art of home building, renovation and repair for
people who are interested in how practical science works.

Butcher's
Crossing
It is the
1870's and Will Andrews washes up in Butcher's Crossing, a small
Kansas town on the outskirts of nowhere. Butcher's Crossing is full
of restless men looking for ways to make money and ways to waste it.
Before long Andrews strikes up a friendship with one of them, who
convinces Andrews to join in an expedition to track down buffalos.
The journey out is grueling, but at the end is a place of paradisal
richness. Once there, however, the three men abandon themselves to an
orgy of slaughter, so caught up in killing buffalo that they lose all
sense of time. Winter soon overtakes them: they are snowed in. Next
spring, half-insane with cabin fever, cold, and hunger, they stagger
back to Butcher's Crossing to find a world as irremediably
changed as they have been. (Publisher's Description)
