Reopening: July 20th
We are delighted to be opening our doors once again, and are profoundly grateful for the patience of the community during these challenging times. Library staff have worked hard throughout the closure of our building to continue providing services and collections virtually. We will begin the process of reopening the building on July 20. Not all services will be immediately available; they will be expanded over time. We will continue to offer virtual programming and curbside pickup in order to maximize access to the Library within the limits of social distancing. Please read on for more information about our services.
We will continue to follow the recommendations of state and local health professionals in order to ensure that the Library is safe for both patrons and staff. As information and recommendations change, Library services may be adjusted. While we hope this will not be the case, we are prepared to close building again if health professionals believe it to be necessary.
This will not initially be the Library as any of us remember it, but we hope to provide the same quality of customer service and care that you have come to expect from us in this new version of the Lake Bluff Library. We appreciate your continued patience and look forward to seeing you again!
What will be different?
- Masks are required to enter the building.
We will have disposable masks available at the door if you need one. If you require accommodations, please call the Library at 847-234-2540 or email the reference desk.
- Building capacity is limited.
We are limiting the number of patrons allowed in the building at one time. If we are at capacity, you will need to wait until someone leaves in order to enter the Library. Onsite staffing will also be limited and most staff will be working remotely.
- Hours are limited.
The building will be open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:00pm to 6:00pm only.
- If you take an item from the shelf and decide not to borrow it, do not reshelve it.
Carts or bins will be made available to collect these materials so that they can be disinfected.
- Children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by an adult.
Our Unattended Child Policy will now apply to children under the age of 11.
- Social distancing markers and directional arrows have been added, along with Plexiglass barriers at all public service points.
Please observe all signage—it helps keep everyone safe.
- Credit card payments only.
We are temporarily going cash/check free for fines and fees. Credit or debit card payments will be accepted at the front desk beginning July 20.
- Seating is reduced.
All cloth covered seating has been stored and seating is very limited.
- Stay home if you are sick.
Help keep others healthy: stay home when you are sick. Remember, we also have a ton of digital resources that can be accessed from home—you won’t even have to get out of your pajamas!
- Please be considerate of the length of your visit.
It makes us sad to say this, but we are encouraging patrons to keep their visits brief and to not linger so that we can ensure that we are not exceeding capacity.
Available Services in Stage 2
Please be aware: our services are limited right now, but they will not be limited forever. High contact services have been temporarily suspended; other services require some additional time and planning before they can be offered safely to the public. Please feel free to contact our reference desk with questions.

The building will be open for browsing and checkout on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2-6pm.
- Faxing, Printing, and Copying

- Reference and Reader’s Advisory
Reference and Reader’s Advisory services are available, but we are encouraging patrons to utilize these services via email or phone if they are able to do so.

If you do not have a library card and would like to get one, you can fill out our Temporary Library Card Application online.
- Curbside Pickup
Curbside Pickup will continue its current hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

All Library programming will be offered virtually only through at least the end of February. To attend a Library program, you will need to register through the Library’s event calendar.
- Public Laptop Access
Effective 8/31, laptops will be available for in-Library use. Ask at the front desk to reserve a laptop.
