No Mow May

The Lake Bluff Public Library is participating in No Mow May.

May 1 - May 31, 2024

Did you know that lawns cover 40 million acres in the United States? In addition to accounting for two percent of US land, lawns are also the largest irrigated crop in the United States. However, lawns provide little benefit to wildlife and can often be harmful. Grass-only lawns lack floral resources and nesting sites for bees. Additionally, lawns are often treated with pesticides that harm bees and other important invertebrates.

No Mow May is an initiative started by Plantlife, an international conservation organization whose aim is to making lasting positive change for wildflowers, plants, and fungi. The goal of No Mow May is to pause mowing during the month of May. This supports local pollinators during a time when floral resources are limited.

This year, the Lake Bluff Library will be participating in No Mow May to support our local pollinators in getting the resources that they need, as well as support goals outlined in the Village's Sustainability Plan. Our regular mowing schedule will be paused throughout May and will resume as normal in June.
