Notary Services
The Lake Bluff Public Library offers free notary services for the benefit of all Library users, in accordance with Illinois Notary Public Act (5 ILCS 312). Library Notaries will decline to provide notary services that do not comply with the provisions of this Act and the Library’s Notary Policy.
Important information
- Please review the Library’s Notary Policy before asking for an appointment.
- Please call the Library (847-234-2540) to inquire about notary availability.
- All appointments must be completed no later than 1 hour before closing.
- Please bring current, valid identification issued by a state or federal agency that includes your photo and your signature. Examples of such ID include a current driver’s license, state ID card, U.S. Military ID, or U.S. Passport.
- DO NOT sign the document(s) before your appointment. You must sign the document(s) in front of the Notary. All people signing the document(s) must be present.
- Notary service is provided on a first come, first served basis. Service is not guaranteed.
Documents Not Accepted for Notarization*
- Government Form I-9 or Employment Eligibility Verification
- Immigration documents
- Documents of conveyance of real estate, mortgages, other real estate loans, documents or transactions or property transfers including but not limited to refinancing or other types of real estate loans, purchases, sales, and beneficial interests in land trusts and deeds
- Wills, living wills, living trusts, powers of attorney, codicils or depositions
- Documents recorded by the County (e.g. birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates)
- Documents that do not contain notary language or a notary certificate or from which the notary certification can be detached from the document being notarized
- Documents with any blank spaces
* These types of documents can require technical or legal knowledge that is beyond the scope of this free service
Please note: In accordance with Illinois Notarial Law, the Library Notary may, at their sole discretion, decline to provide Notary Service. A Library Notary is not an attorney that is licensed to practice law in Illinois. Library Notaries are not allowed to draft legal documents or records, nor may they give legal advice on any matter, including, but not limited to, matters of immigration, or accept or charge fees for the performance of those activities.
